I attend, support, and appreciate a church which meets in a gymnasium. I enjoy wearing my boots and jeans, sipping coffee from a Yeti, while listening to our preacher deliver a message as he paces in an untucked shirt and loafers. I happily sing along with the praise team’s guitars and drums set atop a stage with lights and props. But I grew up in a sanctuary where I wore dresses and heels and never even considered chewing gum! I quietly observed our preacher who wore a suit as he delivered a sermon from behind a pulpit. There was a full choir in robes accompanied by an organ. And the stained glass windows seemed to glow, at least in my memory. While the details of these worship experiences differ greatly, one thing remains; reverence is found in the position of the heart. Among the many lessons brought to us by Covid-19 is a reminder that we ARE the Church – at home, at work, and at play. But I sure do love a stained glass window. Still and always. Hope you love this simple symbol of reverence, too.
