Partially Integrated Collage - Diptych

 

Remnants are surviving traces, or small remaining quantities (and perhaps qualities) of something larger.

I was recently telling an artist friend of mine how I was building a collage from scraps I find (or perhaps they find me). While the description is seemingly odd, I knew she would understand. Like a bird builds a nest, layer upon layer, I placed discarded pieces of Masonite, cardboard, washers, and even metallic threads. With each addition of cut, torn, or frayed elements, I added paint embellishments – both exposing and enhancing the textural elements of the items. The collection of materials resulted in a mingling of smooth, rough, matte, shiny, and reflective surfaces. From beginning to end I was intent on re-creating, if you will. Music played, and I found meaning in my method. Even the two frames were repurposed, as I found them collecting dust after they’d housed old, faded photos. The overriding sentiment of Remnants remains one of somber reflection that is altogether alluring to me. I hope you find your own message upon reflection and take from it what you will.
